What Is the Easiest Way to Clean Your Couches?

    Cleaning

    • Run a vacuum over the couch to collect loose dirt and debris. Remove cushions while you sweep, and be sure to get into the cracks and crevices where dirt usually accumulates most.

Wash next, but be careful to use as little water as possible. Too much water will soak into sofa cushions, leading to the development of mold and mildew that can harbor bacteria and emit an unattractive odor. In a dish, mix 2 cups of warm water and two spoonfuls of liquid dish detergent. Whisk ingredients until a few inches of soap bubbles form. Use only the bubbles to clean the couch. Scoop up a few spoonfuls of the bubbles, then work into the couch with a sponge or cloth. Continue until the couch has been cleaned to your satisfaction.

    Disinfecting

    • Bacteria can often develop on the couch through daily wear and tear or from such things as dropped food and other factors. White vinegar works well as an inexpensive disinfectant. In a spray bottle, mix 2 cups of water with 1 cup of distilled white vinegar. Spray onto the couch; no additional work is required. The vinegar is mild enough to leave on the couch, yet strong enough to kill bacteria that it may be harboring.

    Deodorizing

    • Odor can also form on sofas. In this case, sprinkle a dusting of baking soda over the couch. Let sit for at least 30 minutes, or a few hours when possible, then vacuum to collect the loose baking soda. This will remove odor and keep your couch smelling fresh.
