• Clean room particle counters take measurements of the air to detect any contaminants in the controlled environment. Most particle counters use a laser diode and light scattering method. Each particle scatters the light a certain amount and the particle counter's lens system converts the light scattered into an electrical pulse. • Clean rooms have different standards of acceptable particle levels depending on the environment. Some laboratory testing, for example, requires the strictest level of particle limitation and must be constantly monitored. These clean rooms likely need continuous particle counters, which are permanent fixtures in the room. Some may be plugged in, while others are built into the room itself with sensors spaced around the clean room. The latter are known as remote particle counters, while the types that are plugged in are called surface particle counters. Other clean rooms have less stringent requirements. A clean room that needs to be reasonably controlled but tested only monthly, for example, shouldn't require a continuous monitoring system built into the room itself. • Clean room particle counters are highly specialized equipment. Most professions won't ever find the need for one. If you must purchase a particle counter, do so through a reputable dealer who has proven experience in clean room technology. You can find companies online but a better bet is going through a professional association for a recommendation. Professional associations often keep vendor recommendations on hand from members who can vouch for specific products and companies.
