How to Connect a Wire to a Breaker Box
- 1). Turn off the power to the breaker box by flipping the main breaker to the off position.
- 2). Remove the cover from the breaker box and set it aside.
- 3). Drill a 3/4-inch hole in the top plate of the wall directly above the breaker box.
- 4). Remove a single 1/2-inch prefabricated knockout from the top of the panel using a flathead screwdriver, hammer and pliers.
- 5). Insert a NMC pop-in connector into the knockout space. Do this by pressing the connector firmly until it goes into place.
- 6). Route the NMC wire from the first device or device box in the circuit down through the hole you drilled in step three.
- 7). Insert the wire through the NMC connector into the breaker box. Pull in enough wire to reach to the bottom of the box and back to the top. This ensures enough workable wire is available.
- 8). Slice the NMC wire down the middle from the point of entry into the breaker box to the end of the wire. Completely remove all sheathing.
- 9). Attach the bare copper wire to the ground bar. The ground bar is located on either the left or right side of the breaker box.
- 10
Attach the white wire to the neutral bar. The neutral bar is located opposite the ground bar and has a larger gauge wire marked with either white or gray tape attached to it. - 11
Loosen the hot terminal screw on the predetermined circuit breaker. Strip approximately 3/4-inches from the end of the remaining black wire and insert it into the circuit breaker. Tighten the screw. - 12
Remove the correct rectangular circuit breaker space in the breaker box cover, using a screwdriver, hammer and pliers. Replace the breaker box cover and make all connections at the device end of the circuit. - 13
Flip the main power breaker and the single circuit breaker on. Use a voltage tester to check the functioning of the circuit.
