How to Kill Mold in AC Ducts
- 1). Put on a dust mask to prevent inhalation of mold spores. This is particularly important if you have asthma or mold allergies.
- 2). Turn off your air conditioning unit. Pull out the filter and examine it. If it is moldy, bag it and throw it away, but don't replace it yet.
- 3). Pull the panel off your air conditioner and find the coils. Underneath the coils, you'll see a condensation pan. If it is moldy, this is how the mold is getting into your ductwork. Don't handle it, because the contractor you're about to call will clean or replace it, along with cleaning the coils, fans and interior workings of the air conditioner.
- 4). Cut into the insulation surrounding the ducts with a sharp utility knife. Examine the fiberglass for mold. If you find it, remove all of the insulation from the ductwork, bag it and throw it away because it cannot be effectively cleaned.
- 5). Contact a reputable duct cleaning service. Clearing mold from AC ducts is not something you can do yourself with a vacuum cleaner or a rented ozone unit, as many DIY sites recommend. Call at least three companies for an estimate, check their references, and choose the contractor you think is most trustworthy.
- 6). Replace your air conditioning filter, and the insulation surrounding ductwork after the ducts have been professionally cleaned.
