    Mold and Mildew

    • Mold and mildew are both fungi that grow on furniture and produce a musty aroma. In addition, they can possibly leave permanent stains on the surface if not dealt with in a timely manner. Mold and mildew will begin to grow on furniture when the item becomes damp or stored in humid, moist and dark locations. The furniture absorbs the odors, which can linger in the fibers long after you have removed the fungus.

    White Vinegar

    • Vinegar is a pungent liquid used in various homemade cleaning recipes. By misting upholstered furniture with white vinegar and letting it air-dry, you will remove the odors naturally. In addition, you can use white vinegar to remove a wide array of smells from the upholstery as often as needed. For wood furniture, dampen a microfiber cloth with white vinegar, wipe the furniture thoroughly, and then let it dry.

    Baking Soda

    • Baking soda has many uses in the home, including removing musty odors from furniture. To remove odors from furniture with upholstery, simply cover it with baking soda, wait 24 hours, and then vacuum it off the surface. For wooden furniture, dissolve 1 cup of baking soda in 1 gallon of water, and wipe the hard surface with a cloth dampened in the mixture. After letting the mixture dry, wipe the baking soda residue off the wood furniture with a clean microfiber cloth dampened in cool water.

    Considerations

    • Before using any odor removal method on your furniture, first test it on a small and hidden area of the item. If staining, damage or discoloration occurs, discontinue use. To prevent a musky smell on the furniture, always wipe spills as soon as they happen. If the furniture becomes wet, dry it as soon as possible. In addition, store the furniture in a cool and dry environment.
