Washing Instructions for Quilts

    • 1). Use a mild laundry detergent free of dyes, scents or and softeners. These additives wear fabric down. Always use a liquid detergent and make sure it is fully dissolved in the water before adding your quilt to ensure you don't leave undiluted detergent in the folds of the fabric.

    • 2). Wash the quilt in cold water on a gentle cycle. If the quilt is small, you may be able to wash it in your home washing machine. Do not try to force a large quilt into a small machine. Laundromats have larger commercial washers that will better fit them.

    • 3). Dry your quilt partially in a clothes dryer on low heat. Take care when lifting your quilt from the washer. It will be heavy, and the weight can pull out stitches. Support the weight of the quilt with your arms. Do not use dryer sheets.

    • 4). Hang dry your damp quilt by either laying it out on grass or hanging from a clothes line. Do not air dry during full sun, as this will fade the colors. Bring your quilt in as soon as it is dry. Do not iron.

    • 5). Air your quilt between washings by hanging out or laying outside, out of direct sunlight, for several hours. A quilt that is used daily and is not exposed to pets or spills needs to be washed yearly.
