Dip a clean sponge in your rug shampoo solution. Squeeze out the excess water so the sponge is wet but not dripping. Scrub the surface of your small area rug in a back and forth motion. - 4). Rinse your sponge under cool water and dip it in the soapy solution. Continue this process until the entire rug has been washed, changing the soap solution if it looks dirty. Turn the rug over and wash the bottom side in the same manner.
- 5). Empty the soapy solution from your bucket and rinse the bucket well. Fill your bucket with cool water for rinsing the rug and add 1 cup of white vinegar to the rinse water. The vinegar helps retain the color in your rug fibers and also neutralizes any remaining odors.
- 6). Use a clean sponge to apply the vinegar rinse water to your small area rug. Scrub the rinse water into both sides of the rug, rinsing the sponge frequently and exchanging dirty rinse water for a batch of clean rinse water.
- 7). Press a squeegee against your rug fibers, starting at the end of the small area rug and continuing down to the other end. Remove excess moisture from your small area rug by squeegeeing the entire surface to force the moisture out. Turn the small area rug over and squeegee the other side, as well.

Lay your small area rug, right side up, near an open window or outdoors but out of direct sunlight. Allow the rug to dry completely, then turn it over so the bottom side can dry. - 9). Pour pet odor neutralizer on the site of any lingering odors in your small area rug. Allow the pet odor neutralizer to sit and absorb odor-causing bacteria overnight. Vacuum the rug to remove the neutralizer.
