How to Get the Water Out of My Basement
- 1). Determine the amount of water in the basement. If just a small amount accumulated, cleaning up is quick and painless.
- 2). Use a mop or towels to soak up the water puddles. Drain excess water into buckets and empty them in the yard.
- 3). Open the windows to allow fresh air into the basement. This will help clear out the smell of collected water as well as sped the drying process.
- 4). Turn the electricity back on. Run a fan in the basement to help dry the floor.
- 1). Examine the amount of water in the basement. If there's a lot of water, you will need to use a pump to remove it. With the power shut off in the basement, you can run the pump through another part of the house that does have electricity via an extension cord, or you can run it via batteries or a generator.
- 2). Put on rubber gloves and boots for safety and connect a rigid hose to the pump suction valve. Leave the other end of the hose in the water. It's best to start using the hose in the area where the most damage could occur or the area with the deepest water.
- 3). Connect a flexible hose to the pump via the discharge valve. This hose will be used to carry the water out to an area with proper drainage.
- 4). Take the end of the hose to an area far enough away from the house so that it won't reenter the basement.
- 5). Turn the pump on and allow it to suck up the water and drain it out of the basement. Adjust the hose as needed so as to not flood any area. Allow the pump to run until all the water has been removed.
- 6). Use a mop and bucket to collect any remaining water that the pump may have missed. Drain the excess into the bucket.
- 7). Open all windows and doors to allow fresh air to enter the basement. This will allow for air circulation and help keep any mildew or mold from growing .
- 8). Turn the electricity in the basement back on. Use a large fan to help dry the basement floor faster.
