Death Penalty in the Philippines After a Beauty Queen"s Killing

103 31
The gruesome murder of a mother who was "stuffed and cemented into a steel container" (as what a national report described) and thrown into the seawaters off Navotas calls for a serious reconsideration of the death penalty in the Philippines.
Such unthinkable death that Ruby Rose Barrameda-Jimenez suffered in the hands of her yet unknown torturers shows that heinous crimes in our midst are becoming more beastly, barbaric.
As we all know, this kind of unimaginable death was not the first in the country and certainly won't be the last unless our national government pursues more drastic and offensive solutions to the growing crime problems of our land.
We've been reading nerve-cracking stories of murders of innocent women whose bodies were chopped into pieces and thrown into different locations.
We've been watching video footage of helpless village people whose houses were set aflame by terrorists and innocent children mercilessly shot to death by bandits.
All over the country there have been increasing numbers of robberies and murders that should not happen in a country that is known for its Christian values.
It is truly dishearteningly that Philippine reputation as a Christian country in Asia does not speak for what has been happening in our neighborhood.
If indeed majority are followers of Christ, why are there more violent killings in the Philippines than in most regions in Asia and even in the world? Some have pointed out that poverty has been a driving force behind this increasing crime and violence.
Due to extreme poverty, many have resorted to gun-for-hire services.
We are bombarded with news reports of hold-ups and robberies in many provinces of the country - a dangerous sign of the country's unhealthy economic status, a fact that is hard to accept by Malacanang.
It is really difficult to present a detailed solution to all the violence and crime because each crime has its own unique background and one solution may not be as effective to the other as it was used in another crime.
However, a reintroduction of the death penalty into the Philippine justice system, many have become more convinced than ever before, can really make a difference.
Previous opposition hurled against the use of death penalty as deterrent to crime does not make sense at all in this scary era of our generation when criminals have become more sophisticated and merciless and their tactics more damaging to humanity than ever before.
If the Philippine government won't act fast today and take more aggressive measures in confronting evil in our midst, an unthinkable death like that of Ruby Rose Barrameda will always make us emotionally and psychologically uncomfortable no matter how comfortable our surrounding is.
