- 1). Put nanomagnets into the oil. The amount of magnets you need will depend on the amount of oil that is spilled. There is no set amount of nanomagnets needed to clean up an oil spill. However, you should have enough of the magnets so that they are dispersed throughout the oil.
- 2). Hold a magnet over the oil spill. The magnet should be large in size compared with the nanomagnets and have a strong magnetic force.
- 3). Move the large magnet toward the area where you would like the oil to accumulate. The oil will gather around the nanomagnets and follow them.
- 4). Wipe up the oil spill with paper towels and rags and place them into a trash bag.
- 5). Fill a bucket with soapy water and place the nanomagnets in them to clean up the magnets. When they are clean, remove them and place them on a flat surface to dry.
- 6). Consult with your local solid waste authority to determine how you should dispose of the bucket of water, soiled linens and paper towels.
