Lead Abatement Removal
- Lead-based paint can be removed by heating and scraping, using needle guns, vacuum blasting, abrasive sanding, or by chemical means. Respirators and dust collection systems are used to reduce exposure to lead. Another option is to remove and then replace the component, such as a window or door, that contains the lead paint.
- Soil contaminated with lead from leaded gasoline, exterior paint or mining activities can be removed and replaced with fresh soil. If not all the contaminated soil is removed, the soil should at least be replaced to a depth that won't allow contaminated soil to be uncovered. Adding grass will help prevent erosion.
- Lead in the form of dust from nearby paint or soil sources can also cause elevated lead levels. Removal of the dust, usually by wet mopping or high-efficiency particulate accumulator (HEPA) vacuuming, does not alter the original source of lead and therefore provides only a temporary reduction in lead levels.
