How to Grow Red Wine Grapes in Wisconsin
- 1). Select the right grapes for your region, to ensure success. Grow Reliance, Frontenac or Swenson's Red as red grapes in Wisconsin. Purchase 2-year-old canes from a local nursery for best success, as established canes are more likely to survive in this region. French hybrids such as Aurore, Foch, Leon Millot and Aris will only grow in pots in this region.
- 2). Plant grapes after the last frost is off the ground, to protect them from cold temperatures. The last frost in Wisconsin falls in mid to late May, depending on the region. When planting, choose a site that has at least 10 to 14 feet in width for each grapevine and sits in full sun for at least eight hours a day. Grapes also require full drainage and do best on south-facing slopes, where they'll receive full sun and good drainage. Avoid any low-lying areas, as those are prone to frost.
- 3). Amend the soil at your chosen site with a combination of 1/3 quick-draining soil or loam, 1/3 organic compost and 1/3 coarse gravel, to give grapevines the nutrition and drainage they require. Mix the amendment into the top 6 inches of soil and bury each grapevine deeply enough to cover its root ball. Pack amended soil in around the roots during planting, to eliminate any air pockets. Water the grapes with 2 inches of water.
- 4). Put a trellis behind the grapes to support them when they get older, and spread 2 to 3 inches of organic mulch over the soil to protect the soil's warmth and moisture. Grapes will suffer if they go dry or get too cold. Weed the site periodically to keep any competition away from the grapes, and put them on a weekly watering schedule of 2 inches a week.
