Removing Oxidized Spots From Copper
- 1). Wash the copper before addressing the oxidized spots to prevent abrasive grime from interfering with the process. Squeeze a drop of regular dishwashing soap into a pail. Mix 1 quart of warm water into the soap.
- 2). Saturate a soft cleaning rag in the soap solution. Gently wipe the entire copper object with the soapy rag. Remove all grime from the copper.
- 3). Moisten another rag in fresh water. Wipe the soapy grime off the copper, thoroughly rinsing the object.
- 4). Squeeze 1 tablespoon of ordinary ketchup onto a fresh rag. Coat the ketchup with a pinch of table salt.
- 5). Rub the salty ketchup over the oxidized copper in circular motions.
- 6). Continue buffing the oxidized spots until they completely dissolve and the copper shines. Add more ketchup to the rag, if necessary, and apply more salt for stubborn oxidized spots.
- 7). Moisten another rag with warm water. Wipe the ketchup, salt and oxidized residue off the copper.
- 8). Buff the shiny, tarnish-free copper with a soft towel.
