- 1). Clean spills immediately by blotting the liquid up with a soft cloth. Use a mild liquid cleanser with bleach and water to clean the area, rinse thoroughly with water to remove all traces of soap, and dry with a soft cloth.
- 2). Clean oil stains with one of the following: mild liquid soap, bleach, household detergent, ammonia, mineral spirits or acetone. Once the stain has been dissolved by the cleaner, wipe the area with mild soap and water as described in Step 1.
- 3). Clean organic stains from substances such as coffee or tea with a 12-percent solution of hydrogen peroxide and a few drops of ammonia, if extra cleaning power is required. Rinse thoroughly with water and wipe dry with a soft cloth.
- 4). Remove ink stains from light-colored stone with either bleach or hydrogen peroxide, and from dark-colored stones with lacquer thinner or acetone. Wipe the area down with soap and water as described in Step 1.
- 5). Buff water spots and rings with dry 0000 steel wool.
- 1). Clean stains caused by metal and water, such as rust, by mixing a poultice of whiting and a commercial rust remover, such as CLR. The paste should be about the consistency of peanut butter.
- 2). Moisten the stained area with distilled water.
- 3). Apply the poultice with a wood or plastic scraper so that it is about a quarter- to a half-inch thick and about 1 inch beyond the edge of the stained area.
- 4). Cover the poultice with plastic wrap, and seal the edges with masking tape. If you are worried about the masking tape sticking, you can simply weigh the edges down rather than tape them.
- 5). Let the poultice dry about 24 to 48 hours. As it dries, it will pull the stain out of the stone. Remove the plastic after about 24 hours and allow the poultice to finish drying. This process can be repeated until the stain is gone. If the stain remains after repeating this process about five times, you may need to call a professional to treat the stone.
