Country Save Laundry Detergent - Product Review
I love a good story and Country Save Laundry Detergent has one. The company was founded by Elmer Pearson - of Elmer's Glue fame. When Elmer retired from Borden, he wasn't ready to give up all those years as a chemist. And in 1977 he formulated Country Save Laundry Detergent as a safe, gentle product without dyes, fragrance, phosphates, enzymes or brighteners.Often recommended for babies or those with sensitive skin, Country Save is also completely biodegradable and safe for the environment.
Country Save comes in packages ranging from 5 pounds to 50 pounds. The detergent comes in a cardboard carton with an inner poly bag liner and a measuring scoop. (My carton had no liner bag.) All components are made from post-consumer materials.
The lack of the inner bag resulted in the powdered detergent spilling when I opened the box. And, I think the box could be a problem if your laundry area has high moisture. My solution was to pour the powder into a reusable plastic container with a tight-fitting lid.
I was pleased with the cleaning results. With no added fragrance, my clothes simply smelled clean and fresh. I did not use a fabric softener and was pleased with how both dryer-dried and line-dried laundry felt.
The five-pound box will clean 40 loads in a top-loading washer and 80 loads in a front-loading model. The suggested retail price for a five pound box is $8.99 - 22 cents per load for a top load machine, 11 cents for a front load machine. This is a great savings over name-brand and even store-brand detergents.
However, when you add in the $12.50 shipping charge, the price per load goes up dramatically. Shipping costs per box are adjusted downward as you buy more product and the cost per load will decrease. If you can find Country Save at a retailer (outlets are listed on their Web site) you'll get an even better deal and a great detergent.
