How to Kill Mildew in the Crawl Space
- 1). Pour undiluted white vinegar into a pump sprayer and thoroughly saturate dirt floors with the vinegar. "Good Housekeeping's" microbiologist Gina Marino states that vinegar will reduce mildew and mold by 90 percent. Let the vinegar dry on the dirt.
- 2). Dampen a cloth with white vinegar and wipe mildew off wood and other hard surface areas in the crawlspace.
- 3). Let several UV lamps run inside your crawlspace for 24 hours. The light from the UV lamps with kill mold, mildew and their spores. Never leave the lamps unattended.
- 4). Place fans inside the crawlspace and let run for several hours. The fans will help circulate and ventilate the stale air inside the crawlspace. Prop the crawlspace door open when performing this step.
- 5). Run a dehumidifier in the crawlspace for several days. Dehumidifiers remove moisture in the air and -- without moisture -- mildew and mold cannot live.
- 6). Cover the crawlspace dirt floor with a moisture barrier such as polyethylene plastic. The plastic will block moisture from seeping into the dirt thus keeping mildew and mold in the dirt at bay.
- 7). Scatter several charcoal briquettes around the crawlspace to remove musty odors. Alternatively, place several bowls filled with white vinegar inside the crawlspace. Vinegar will remove musty odors present in the air.
