How to Make a Knitting Spool

104 14
    • 1). Set the wooden spool upright on a solid surface.

    • 2). Hammer in a nail 1/4-in. from the hole in the center of the spool. The top half of the nail should be sticking out.

    • 3). Hammer five more nails around the hole at equal distances. Keep each nail 1/4 inch away from the hole and hammer it in halfway so that all the nails are at the same height.

    • 4). Insert the end of a ball of worsted-weight yarn through the hole from top to bottom. Leave a 3-inch tail hanging down.

    • 5). Twist the yarn coming through the top of the spool into a loop. Lay the loop over the first nail and pull the yarn coming from the bottom of the tube to tighten the loop. Make a second loop and lay it over the second nail. Make a third loop and lay it over the third nail. Continue in this fashion until each nail has a loop around it and the working yarn is coming off the last nail. You are then ready to begin knitting.
