The importance of expression and creativity in the education of a child proves itself when children show enthusiasm and excitement when making arts and crafts. To supplement a lesson or just to give your students or children a fun activity, try playing some arts and crafts games to stimulate their imaginations. - On separate pieces of paper, write down things that can be made out of play dough. Examples include animals, foods and objects. Fold the papers, put them in a bowl and have the kids sit in a circle. Give one of the players the bowl and tell him to take a slip of paper and read it silently. He then uses play dough to model the item written on the piece of paper. As he sculpts, the other players try to guess what he's making. The first player to call out the correct answer wins a point. Let all of the kids take turns sculpting. The player with the most points wins at the end of the game.
- Give each of the kids several pieces of paper and drawing tools such as markers, crayons or colored pencils. Instruct the children to draw their idea of a vocabulary word you call out or display. You can use abstract as well as concrete words for the kids to draw. For instance, for the word "romance," kids may draw a big heart or two people holding hands. After each word, the kids all hold up their papers. Select the best representation tape it to a wall and give the artist a point. After several rounds, the child with the most points wins the game (See Reference 2).
- Hand each of the kids a piece of paper and some drawing supplies. On small pieces of paper, write down historical events the kids know about. Give a piece of paper to child, making sure no one else sees it. Have all the kids draw their representation of their events in as much time as you give them. When time is up, each child exchanges pictures with someone else. Each child tries to identify the event the picture signifies and writes down her guess. Points go to the kids who guess correctly and the ones who drew the proper interpretation of the event. For a variation on the game, try using fictional events from stories.
