How to Knit Purses for Beginners
- 1). Make a slipknot by forming a loop with your yarn. Pull the end of the yarn through the loop. Place your knitting needle through the knot and pull gently on both ends to secure. This creates your first stitch.
- 2). Cast on your next stitch by wrapping the yarn around your left thumb to make a loop. Insert the needle through the loop, slide your thumb out and pull gently to tighten. Repeat until you have 26 stitches on your needle.
- 3). Knit the first stitch by inserting the empty, right-hand needle into the first stitch, from front to back. Wrap the yarn over the right-hand needle to form a new loop. Bring the right-hand needle out of the stitch and pull through the new loop. Slip the original stitch off the left-hand needle. Repeat until you have knit all the stitches on the row.
- 4). Continue knitting each stitch on every row until your work measures 18 inches from the beginning.
- 5). Make a buttonhole by knitting the first 12 stitches of the row as normal. Make a yarn over by bringing the yarn over the right-hand needle. Knit two stitches together by inserting the needle through the next two stitches and knitting as normal. Knit the remaining 12 stitches of the row.
- 6). Knit the next two rows and then bind off all stitches to prevent your work from unraveling. To do this, knit the first two stitches of the row. Insert the left-hand needle into the first worked stitch and bring this loop over the second stitch. Knit the net stitch so you have two on your left-hand needle and bring the loop over again. Continue until all stitches have been bound off.. On the last stitch, cut the yarn, leaving a 10-inch tail. Bring the yarn through the last stitch to form a slipknot and pull to secure.
- 7). Fold the knitted piece in half and thread the bind-off tail onto a tapestry needle. Sew up both sides of the piece to form the bag.
- 8). Make the strap by casting on 80 stitches and then binding off all stitches. With yarn and tapestry needle, sew each end of the strap to the inside of the bag.
- 9). Thread yarn through the tapestry needle and sew the button onto the bag so it lines up with the buttonhole.
- 10
Turn the bag inside-out and weave in the cast-on tail by threading through the tapestry needle. Guide the tail through the bumps of the stitches so it becomes invisible. Cut any excess and repeat for the bind-off tail.
