    • 1). Put on a pair of gardening gloves to protect your hands from blisters, splinters and scratches.

    • 2). Cut away any excessively long branches that are sticking out of the bush using a pair of lopping shears. Gather and discard all fallen pieces.

    • 3). Shave down the top of the bush first, using a pair of pruning shears to cut an even and level layer. Take a step back after every inch to compare the size of the bush to nearby trees to see if you have achieved the size difference you seek. Do not cut away more than 4 inches from the top of the bush in any pruning session.

    • 4). Cut the sides, front and back of the bush around the freshly cut top. Make the shape of the bush as smooth as possible by cutting all offending branches or twigs that stick out of your preferred level.

    • 5). Rake all the pieces you cut off and remove them from the area to prevent disease and infestations of both the bush and the trees.
