Homemade Schoolhouse Pattern Quilts
- Choose and purchase all the fabric needed for this quilt. Buy four different pieces of fabric. You need a very light color such as white or cream and three varying shades of another color for the schoolhouse. Start with one yard of each fabric. How much fabric you need depends on how many blocks you want to make and the desired size of your finished quilt. Choose 100-percent-cotton fabrics for best results.
- The patterns for the schoolhouse block vary a little bit. Follow either of the links at the bottom of this article and print out the pattern. Trace the pattern onto graph paper. Cut out the pieces of the pattern. Trace them out separately onto another piece of graph paper, enlarging each piece of the pattern by ½-inch. Mark the pieces clearly as to what portion of the schoolhouse they are and also which print of fabric you want to use. Cut them out. These are the pieces you will use to cut out your fabric.
- Arrange the pattern pieces on the cloth. Butt pieces up against each other so as not to waste fabric. Pin in place and cut out enough pieces to make one block.
Once you know that everything fits together properly, fold the fabric into layers and cut out multiple pieces of the quilt block at a time for subsequent blocks. - Arrange the pieces on your work surface. Study the original quilt pattern. Look for the rows that are in the block. Breaking up the block helps you see which pieces to sew together. Sew each piece in each individual row; there are four rows in this particular pattern. Make sure to press the seam with an iron before sewing on the next piece.
Sew the rows together when they are all completed. Press all new seams with an iron.
Check the block over to make sure everything fits together well and looks right. Make any adjustments to your pattern if necessary. Sew as many blocks as you want for your desired quilt size. These blocks are approximately 9 ½ inches square.
