- 1). Measure the length, width and average depth of the above-ground pool. Multiply these numbers to get the pool's volume.
- 2). Multiply the pool volume by the appropriate multiplier value -- based on the pool's shape -- to get the pool's gallonage. The multiplier value for round pools is 5.9.
- 3). Divide the total gallonage of the pool by 8. Divide that result by 60. This calculates the pool's recommended gallon-per-minute flow rate, or the flow rate needed for all the pool water to be circulated in eight hours.
- 4). Choose a filter that matches or slightly exceeds your pool's recommended flow rate. All filters have a specification sticker showing the flow rate in gallons per minute.
