The iPhone 5 Phenomenon

September 17, 2012, Los Angeles, CA. – As expected, upon announcement of the release of iPhone 5, Apple fans have probably been losing sleep over this much-awaited device. The excitement and anxious anticipation can almost be considered a phenomenon.

During its press conference, Apple has announced that iPhone 5 will have a slew of improvements over its predecessor, the iPhone 4S.   Of the many improvements, let me highlight some of the more obvious enhancements that Apple has done for iPhone 5.

1.  Screen War - Unlike many of its competitors in the smartphone market, Apple has decided to give iPhone 5 a 4-inch 1136x640 Retina display with a 16:9 aspect ratio.  This means that iPhone users can have an extra row of apps on their screen enabling them to browse faster and select their apps more effectively.

On the flip side, iPhone 5's Retina display can prove to be a liability for active people when using the device outdoor.  Many of its users have previously complained about its low readability in daylight.  This is where other players thrive, for instance, the Nokia Lumia 920 came up with an impressive 4.5in Nokia PureMotion HD+ WXGA IPS LCD display, outfitted with Super Sensitive touch technology and Nokia ClearBlack with high brightness mode and sunlight readability enhancements.

2.  Design Battle – From afar, iPhone 5's design can be mistaken as non-different from its predecessors, the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. But looking closely, there are very obvious differences in its overall design and dimension.  For one, iPhone 5's chassis is made entirely of aluminum and glass. In addition, it is also lighter and thinner than its older brother. To be precise, iPhone 5 weighs only 112 grams compared to its predecessor's 140 grams. In terms of thickness, it is almost 2 millimeter thinner. These dimensions have made iPhone 5 the lightest and thinnest smartphone in the market today.

3.  System Challenge – We have talked about the face and the body of iPhone 5, now let's talk about its soul - the A6 processor. Apple claims it's a much faster processor than the previous A5 version. It has given the A6 22% faster processing speed. What does this mean to the average user?

It means that iPhone 5 users will be able to have faster download and upload speeds, more efficient live streaming and much faster browsing capabilities. Prior to Apple's A6 processor, iPhone has been known to lag behind its Android competitors in terms of speed and efficient data handling. With the incorporation of a faster processor, iPhone 5 users will no longer be the slow Internet surfers.

With all the bells and whistles that was drummed up by iPhone 5, eager fans have managed to clog Apple's website with all the pre-order transactions within a few hours of its availability.

It is estimated that by the end of 2012, total iPhone 5 units sold would reach as much as 100 million. That is already almost half of the entire United States' population.  This phenomenon has not only changed the lives of it users but also of the entire mobile communications industry.  For instance, it has invariably created opportunities for other businesses to thrive, one of which is the cellphone and tablet cases and accessories business.
