"The Kissing Hand" Art Projects

Kissing Hand Magnet

• This art project is super easy, so it is an ideal choice for younger children. Paint each child's hand with washable paint and and help him make a hand print on a rectangular piece of card stock. When the paint has dried, give each child a small red heart to glue in the palm of his hand print. Place a magnet on the back and each child will have a first day of school Kissing Hand keepsake to take home. Older children can trace their hands onto construction paper and cut them out instead of painting them.
  
  

Chester Raccon Paper Bag Puppet

• Make a raccoon paper bag puppet after reading "The Kissing Hand." Give each child some scraps of black and white construction paper to and have her cut out two black triangles and two smaller triangles to make ears, two large circles for the raccoon's mask and a smaller black circle for a nose. Glue the face pieces onto the bottom of the bag to make a puppet. Then have each child cut out a large white oval and two small black rectangles with one end rounded off to make the stomach and hands. Show the children how to glue the hands and stomach on the bag. Last glue two large wiggly eyes onto the mask and a add a small heart sticker on one of the hands.
  
  

Kissing Hand Family Portrait

• Give each child a large piece of construction paper. Have him paint his hand then stamp it onto the top of the paper. While the paint dries, have each child draw a picture of his family on a smaller sheet of paper. Attach the family pictures to the large paper underneath the hand print. Give each child a small heart sticker or a small heart cut-out of paper to glue on his hand print. If time allows, let the children share their family portraits.
  
  

Heart Raccoon

• Make a raccoon face out of heart shapes. A large heart turned upside down makes the face. Two black hearts turned sideways with the points touching are the raccoons mask and a small black heart makes his nose. Two more upside down hearts form the ears. Add large, wiggly eyes to the mask and you have a cute raccoon craft to make after reading "The Kissing Hand."
