- 1). Find the Network Interface Device installed by the phone company inside your property. The NID is typically mounted on a wall nearest to where the phone line runs from the phone company utility pole into your house. Open the box, pinch the clip on the modular plug inside, and lift it from its jack to unplug it. Unplugging the modular connector disconnects power from the telephone company and prevents low voltage shock. Loosen the red and green terminal screws beside the plug, using a screwdriver.
- 2). Slip a telephone cable through the opening at the bottom of the NID and pull it up by about 12 inches. Strip off three inches from the cable jacket at its tip, using diagonal pliers. Strip off 1/2 inch from the insulation of the red and green inner wires using a wire stripper. Hook the red and green wires clockwise around their matching red and green terminal screws. Tighten the screws to secure the connection, using a screwdriver.
- 3). Run the phone cable along baseboards, walls or ceilings to the spot where you wish to place a telephone. Cut the cable after allowing an extra foot in length and use cable staples to secure the line. Avoid lining the cable side by side with power lines to prevent magnetic interference.
- 4). Strip off three inches from the cable jacket at its tip, using diagonal pliers. Strip off 1/2 inch from the insulation of the red and green inner wires using a wire stripper. Hook the red and green wires clockwise around their matching red and green terminal screws. Tighten the screws to secure the connection, using a screwdriver.
- 5). Mount an RJ-14 telephone jack on the wall nearest to where you plan to place a phone, using screws or mounting tape supplied with the jack. Pry off or unscrew the jack cover and loosen the red and green screws inside the it, using a slotted screwdriver.
- 6). Hook the red and green wires clockwise around their matching red and green terminal screws. Tighten the screws to secure the connection, using a screwdriver. Replace the jack cover and plug a telephone into it. Replug the modular connector inside the NID to restore power to the telephone line. Lift the handset of your phone and listen for a dial tone.
