How to Wire a Monoblock Sub

    • 1). Identify the positive and negative terminals on the subwoofer as well as on the inside of the subwoofer enclosure. They will usually be marked with red, the international symbol for positive, or with a small + symbol. Likewise the negative will be marked with black or a small - symbol. Since the sub is a single voice coil, it will only have one set of terminals, meaning one negative and one positive terminal.

    • 2). Connect the terminals on the sub to the terminals on the inside of the sub enclosure. Connect the negative to the negative and the positive to the positive. The amount of power your amp has will determine what gauge wire to use. Generally 8 gauge wire or lower will work for a subwoofer.

    • 3). Screw the sub into the subwoofer enclosure to ensure there is an airtight seal. There will be about 10 holes around the perimeter of the sub through which you can insert the screws. Drill the holes in all the way so the sub is secure and airtight.

    • 4). Run speaker wire to the outside terminals of the sub enclosure from the amp. This process is the same as running the wire from the sub to the inside of the sub enclosure. Connect positive to positive and negative to negative. The type of connection piece will be different from brand to brand on the amp as well as the sub enclosure, but make sure the connection is secure and that there are no exposed metal parts of the wire. Exposed metal can lead to shorting out of the stereo system and damaging the amps.

    • 5). Turn on the stereo system to ensure that the sub is playing correctly. It should neither be distorted nor muddy sounding, and no air should be able to escape from the sub enclosure.
