How to Troubleshoot a Sony TV Screen

104 3
    • 1). Check your power connection if you are not receiving any response from your Sony TV. Make sure the Sony TV's power cord is appropriately plugged into either the surge protector or the wall outlet. If the power cord is disconnected you will not be able to troubleshoot your TV any further.

    • 2). Observe your Sony TV's screen and see if there is any "noise" plaguing the display in the form of "snow." "Snow" is the non-technical yet popular term assigned to the phenomenon that occurs when small, rapidly moving gray and white dots distort your screen's picture. The quickest fix for "snow" is to fasten the coaxial cable more tightly into the "ANT IN" port on the back of the Sony TV. Screen distortion occurs even when this cable becomes only slightly loose.

    • 3). Consider checking the A/V cable connections between your cable/satellite receiver box and your Sony TV if your television is receiving power but is suffering from a lack of audio or video. The A/V cable that comes standard has one set of prongs on either of its ends. Each set has one red, one yellow and one white prong. These are supposed to be color-matched to the red, white and yellow A/V ports on the back of the TV and the back of the cable/satellite receiver (one set plugs into the TV and one into the receiver box). These prongs may have become switched up and plugged into the wrong ports, however, so use this color-code to remedy the situation.

    • 4). Check your monitor to see if you are dealing with a powered on Sony TV with a black or blank screen. This lack of any video and audio may be the result of an improper video input selection. Your Sony TV's video input gets switched to accommodate for the use of devices such as DVD players and game systems. You may have neglected to switch the video input back to the one that governs the cable/satellite television feed. Press the "Input" button on your Sony TV's remote several times to cycle back through the video inputs until you again reach the correct one for television. When you reach the correct input the audio and video for your Sony TV will immediately return.

    • 5). Check your Sony TV's display for any irregular blotches. These blotches often occur when your screen becomes harmfully magnetized by external electronic devices that have been left too close to the screen. Remove any such devices and grab a large magnetic coil (refer to "Resources" below for purchasing information). Make large, slow circles with the magnetic coil directly in front of your Sony TV's screen in order to demagnetize it and fix the blotches.
