    • 1). Turn off and unplug TiVo. Use a screwdriver to remove the six screws on the back of TiVo's case. It is recommended that you use a Torx-10 screwdriver. While removing the screws, keep your fingers away from the capacitors as it is possible for them to carry an electrical charge. Getting your fingers too close to the capacitors may cause serious bodily harm.

    • 2). Disconnect the power cable from internal hard drive. Use the same screwdriver to remove all four screws that hold the internal hard drive in place.

    • 3). Lift the cage that holds the hard drive in place out of the box.

    • 4). Connect the TiVo hard drive to your computer. Connect a backup hard drive to your computer. You will need to back up the files on your TiVo hard drive to your backup hard drive in case something goes wrong while you are installing a second hard drive to TiVo.

    • 5). Download the "WinMFS" tool. Click on the "Download" link and select a version to download. Once you have downloaded the program to your computer, right-click the program's icon and select "Run as administrator." Select the drive as being "A" and "1." Click "Tools > Mfscopy." In the drop-down menu, select the destination drives, so that "Source A" and "Destination A" are displayed. Wait for the back up to complete. This make take up to an hour.

    • 6). Turn off your computer.

    • 7). Replace the backup drive with your new drive. Turn your computer back on.

    • 8). Run the WinMFS program as an administrator. Click "File" and select "Drive." Select the original drive as "A." Click the box for the "B" drive. Select "New Hard Drive."

    • 9). Go to "Select > Tools." Choose "Mfsadd."

    • 10

Reinstall the original hard drive, A, into the TiVo.

    • 11

Install the new hard drive, B, in the external case.

    • 12

Connect the external hard drive to the TiVo.

    • 13

Turn on both the TiVo and the hard drive. Wait until TiVo boots. The new external hard drive should be installed, giving you more space to store programs. Be sure to keep this hard drive on at all times; otherwise, you will lose access to the data stored on the hard drive.
