- 1). Place the first shingle on the lower left corner of the roof. The first shingle should overhang the edge of the roof by 1/8 inch.
- 2). Use a hammer to pound roofing nails into the shingle, just below the tar strip on the shingle. Place the nails evenly apart, with a couple of inches between each nail.
- 3). Apply a dab of roofing cement over each nail. Roofing cement will prevent water from leaking through the nail holes.
- 4). Continue installing shingles horizontally across the length of the roof, using the same method as the first shingle. Once you get to the second row, slightly overlap the second row of shingles over the first row.
- 5). Lay the ridge cap shingles vertically over the peak of the roof, once both sides of the roof are shingled. Use the hammer to pound two roofing nails into each ridge cap shingle. One nail should be place on one side of the peak, and the other nail on the other side of the peak.
- 6). Apply a dab of roofing tar under the shingles with loose corners. Tar can also seal shingles around vents and chimneys.
