- 1). Determine the measurements for the drawer. Measure the height, width and depth of the opening and space for the drawer in the cabinet or other item of furniture in which it will fit. These measurements are used to calculate the lengths of the pieces of the components.
- 2). Cut the pieces needed for the drawer. Cut a piece of 1/4-inch plywood to the width and depth dimensions of the drawer; this will serve as the drawer bottom. Cut two pieces of 1-inch pine to a size 1 inch shorter than the depth of the drawer; these will serve as the sides. Cut the front and back pieces out of 1-inch pine to the same length as the width of the drawer. Rip the boards cut for the front, back and sides to the intended height of the drawer.
- 3). Cut a rabbet -- a groove to receive another board -- into the ends of the front and back pieces. Set the cut height of the table saw to 3/4 inch and set the fence 3/4 inch from the blade. Hold the drawer's back board upright and move the end of the board through the saw. Cut both ends of the front and back boards in this manner. Lower the table saw blade to 1/2 inch and run the ends of the front and back through the saw. This second cut should connect to the first cut, removing a piece of wood to create a notch where the side will connect.
- 4). Apply wood glue to the joints and fit the sides to the front. Keep the bottom of the front and sides flush. Nail through the side into the front with 2-inch finishing nails spaced about 3 inches apart. Repeat the process attaching the back to the sides. Allow the glue to dry.
- 5). Turn the drawer frame over and apply the plywood drawer bottom. Apply glue to the entire bottom of the frame and press the plywood drawer bottom in place, keeping it aligned to the frame. Nail the bottom in place with 1-inch finishing nails spaced every 3 inches. Allow glue to dry.
- 6). Add any hardware such as drawer pulls or handles to finish the project.
