How to Select the Right Caulk for the Job

    • 1). Choose household silicone caulk for tile, glass and metal surfaces. Household silicone caulk works well on bathroom plumbing fixtures and joints in plumbing and gutters. Select a construction silicone caulk for dissimilar surfaces such as metal flashing, brick, wood and stone. Paint does not adhere to silicone caulk

    • 2). Use a latex caulk for bathroom caulking around tubs and showers, to fill cracks in plastic, tile or glass and to fill nail holes. Latex caulk can be painted.

    • 3). Choose an expandable foam product for gaps larger than 1/4-inch wide. Polyurethane expandable foam sealant expands as much as 50 percent and must be painted for exterior use. Water-based foam sealant expands 25 percent and does not require painting for exterior use.
