How to Vent a Green Treated Wood Foundation Crawl Space
- 1). Install one square foot of vent for every 150 square feet of crawl space or for every 8 to 10 feet of foundation wall, regardless of whether a vapor barrier is used. Consider using closable vents in areas where temperatures fall below 38 degrees Fahrenheit.
- 2). Install wells for any vents located slightly or fully below the exterior grade. To prevent water damage, avoid placing vents where rain or sprinkler water might enter. Crawl space wood should contain 20% or less moisture.
- 3). Install vents on all sides of the foundation to create cross-flow ventilation, which promotes adequate moisture evaporation. Use rust-resistant metal vents to prevent damage from weather or animals.
- 4). Install vents within 3 feet of each corner to properly scavenge still pockets.
