How to Remove Residential Window Tint
- 1). Soak the window with either soapy water or glass cleaner. To do this, apply the solution to the window and cover it with a plastic garbage bag that is held tight with masking tape around the window. Wait at least an hour for the solution to loosen the glue that hold the film to the window before you begin removing it.
- 2). Use a razor blade to remove both layers of film from the glass. Begin by gently easing the film away from one of the four corners of the window and then carefully pull the film off the window. If you have allowed enough time for the water or window cleaner to liquefy the glue, this task should be easy. However, if the film is old or dry, you might remove only one ply. If this happens, apply the water or window cleaner a second time, cover the window as before and wait another hour or so before using a razor blade to remove the second layer of film.
- 3). Reapply the water or window cleaner and begin removing the remainder of the glue from the window. Once you have done this, either move to the next window and apply the same technique or begin replacing the film according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- 4). Use a steam machine as a convenient alternative to following the techniques above. Spray the warm water on the corner of the window to liquefy the glue. Once you are able to hold the film, steam an area in front of where you intend to remove the film and do so for the remainder of the window until you have successfully removed all the film.
