Scotchgard Safety

    Safety Concerns

    • Blood tests showed that the main chemical component of PFOS and PFOA, perfluorooctanyl, was present in the blood of 3M workers and in wildlife around the world. The chemicals are considered toxic and in 2000, 3M removed the old Scotchgard from the market and replaced it with a new formulation containing no PFOS or PFOA.

    New Formula

    • Scotchgard's new formula still contains chemicals in the fluorochemical class, but those used now are considered more stable and less toxic than the chemicals used in the past. According to 3M, these new chemicals have been approved by the Environmental Protection Agency and do not build up in the blood stream of humans or animals.

    Use

    • While Scotchgard is now considered safer because of the new chemical composition, consumers should always take care when using chemicals around the home. Always consult the label and take precautions as recommended by the manufacturer.
