- 1). Observe your gutters in a rainstorm. Any water leaking over the side of a gutter or cascading to the ground from the edge of the gutter could be pressing up against your basement walls. Make sure any water from the gutter is directed away from the house and down a slope. Use a gutter extension or a splash protector. Also keep gutters clean to prevent overflow.
- 2). Make sure all landscape is conducive to good drainage. The house should be up on a hill with the land sloping away from the house. Driveways and walks should not interfere with drainage, don't use the walk as a conduit for water.
- 3). Check historic or predicted flood level for nearby lakes, rivers and streams. According to the University of Tennessee, if your house is not above the level of the 100-year return frequency flood, it is at risk. If this is the case, make sure your landscape protects your house from the water source.
- 4). Repair any cracks in the foundation with hydraulic cement. Chisel at the crack creating a hole that is larger on the inside with a smaller mouth. Brush away any debris left in the hole. Fill the hole with the hydraulic cement mix, making sure it is level with the outside of the wall and creates a tight seal.
- 5). Seal the foundation walls to waterproof them. Clean thoroughly with a brush and mild detergent, and apply waterproofing agent to the walls to prevent any further moisture from leaking into your basement.
