How to Lay Vinyl Tile in Bathroom
- 1). Use a wrench to remove the nuts holding the toilet to the floor. Then unscrew the toilet supply line, lift the toilet off of the flange and set it aside.
- 2). Examine the floor to be certain that it's dry, then level any uneven parts with floor leveling compound. Spread the compound on with a trowel, let it set, and sand it flat with a belt sander. Vacuum all dust away and wipe the floor clean with a damp rag.
- 3). Draw perpendicular lines from the mid-point of each wall on the floor, extending these lines until they form a cross in the center of the floor. Use a carpenter's square to make sure that the lines forming this cross are exactly perpendicular.
- 4). Lay four tiles so that one corner of each tile touches the center of the cross, but do not glue these down yet. Using these four tiles as a guide, lay all the tiles on the floor until you come to the walls and have to trim tiles to fit. You will have to cut curves in the tiles that fit around the toilet flange. Do this with a utility knife or a coping saw.
- 5). Use a utility knife and a straight edge to cut each of the tiles that will be used to fit around the outer edge of the floor. Most tiles will break apart after you score them once with the knife.
- 6). Return to the center of the floor after all the edge tiles have been cut and begin gluing the tiles, starting with the original four tiles. Lift each tile in turn and spread a coat of adhesive on the floor with a trowel, then set the tile back down and press it into position. Continue the process until all the tiles have been glued.
- 7). Roll the floor with a 100-pound roller to remove bubbles in the adhesive and to set the tiles securely.
- 8). Replace the toilet after the floor is complete, reconnecting the supply line and using a wrench to tighten the nuts to fasten the toilet in place.
