- 1). Close the window so the sash lock's upper and lower portions are easily accessible. Remove the two mounting screws from each piece and remove them from the window.
- 2). Position a new, keyed replacement sash lock on the frame. Align the lock so that the seam between pieces falls at the edge of each half of the sash. Mark through the screw holes into the top of the bottom sash and the top face of the bottom of the upper sash, in essentially the same position as the original thumb latch. Remove the lock from the sash.
- 3). Drill pilot holes in each marked location with a 1/8-inch drill bit to a depth of 1/4-inch. Replace the top sash half of the new lock. Install the screws that came with the lock with a screwdriver, snugging them down firmly.
- 4). Position the bottom half of the lock on the bottom sash and install the screws in the same way. Test the lock by unlocking it with the key and flipping it open and shut. Open and close the window and latch the lock to ensure the window is properly aligned. Adjust the placement of the lock if needed.
- 5). Measure the inside of the sash frames and purchase metal window grilles to fit any windows that are easily accessible, especially in hidden places along the sides and rear of the house.
- 6). Place the grille in the window sash frame and adjust for proper fit. Mark the screw holes along the inside edges of the sash frame on all four sides. There are typically two screws on each edge. Remove the grille and drill pilot holes as you did for the sash lock. Install the screws that came with the grille using a screwdriver.
