How to Build a Wooden Patio
- 1). Cut four 5-foot 9-inch pieces from the 2-by-12s for the deck frame. Leave the other two 2-by-12s at 6-foot.
- 2). Brush wood stain or paint on the six 2-by-12s, the 20 2-by-4s and the 2-by-2. Allow to dry.
- 3). Assemble the frame of the deck on the leveled ground. Put the two 6-foot 2-by-12s on edge parallel to each other 6 feet apart and insert two of the 5-foot 9-inch pieces between them to get a 6-foot square frame. Use 2 1/2-inch screws and screw the frame tightly together. Drive four screws along each end of the 6-foot pieces into the shorter ones.
- 4). Use the two remaining 5-foot 9-inch 2-by-12s inside the frame for additional support. Stand them on edge parallel to the 6-foot sides and equally space them out between the sides. Attach the ends of the beams to the frame with 2 1/2-inch screws. Drive four screws through the 5-foot 9-inch pieces of the outer frame into the beams.
- 5). Use the 6-foot 2-by-4s and the 6-foot 2-by-2 and add the surface to the patio. Line up all 2-by-4s over the frame perpendicular to the two support beams running through the inside of the deck. Lay the 2-by-2 on the side where two inches are left uncovered. Drive a 2 1/2-inch screw through each 2-by-4 board into the two sides and the two support beams. Also attach the 2-by-2.
