How to Construct a Porch Tin Roof
- 1). Erect upright posts at the edge of the porch floor, making sure they are nailed in securely. These will provide the outer frame foundation for the porch roof extension; to promote stability, they should be placed no more than 6 feet apart.
- 2). Attach joists from the edge of the cabin's roof, running towards the upright posts. Again make sure these pieces are nailed down from several angles to keep the roof structure as strong as possible. The joists will essentially serve as the "ribs" of the porch roof system.
- 3). Run cross beams horizontally between the upright posts along the outer edge of the porch. This will serve as a crowning at the outer top edge of the roof system. This crowning, however, is in place to function for its added stability, not in decorative terms.
- 4). Lay the sheets of tin on the roof frame so that you leave adequate overhang on the outer edge of the porch. The roof will not provide good shelter from the elements if this overhang is not figured in.
- 5). Nail the tin sheets down along the joist seams and the outer cross beam crowning. Use roofing nails that have large heads and will resist extraction when the tin is put under the stress of strong winds.
- 6). Lay down the remaining sheet tins with overlap of the previous sheets and nail them in place. This overlapping will reduce the chances of leaks in heavy rains.
- 7). Caulk around each nail point along the tin to prevent rain from seeping in that can cause water damage to the roof system.
