Granite Vs. Tile Countertops

    Cost

    • Tile countertops are generally less expensive than granite. Not only is the cost per square foot less, but installation costs are also lower. In fact, the average homeowner can install tile countertops, but installing granite requires a professional with special tools and expertise. Over time, granite requires regular sealing and polishing, which also increases the long-term costs.

    Stains

    • While granite countertops do not require the extra cleaning like tile grout does, they stain easily. Nearly any product containing acid, such as citrus juice and vinegar, will etch the surface of the stone. On the other hand, acidic foods don't damage ceramic tiles. Both granite and tiles are heat resistant -- hot pans or items from the oven will not damage them.

    Maintenance

    • Tile countertops require very little maintenance other than regular cleaning. However, you must seal granite countertops at least once a year to prevent stains and damage. Over time, dulling of the granite can also occur, which requires professional refinishing and polishing. It's not difficult to replace broken tiles, but damage to a solid granite slab is difficult to repair without replacing the entire piece.

    Durability

    • Both tile and granite are extremely durable. Granite, however, will outlast tile if you care for it properly. A granite countertop can last for decades. Tile will eventually lose its finish, crack or break. Grout between the tiles will also eventually break down, which can result in tiles shifting, breaking or chipping.
