How to Install Tumbled Marble
- 1). Spread an even layer of thinset on the installation surface using the notched side of your trowel. Regardless if you are applying thinset to a wall or a floor, only spread enough thinset for a few tiles at a time until you are comfortable with your installing speed, otherwise you run the risk of the thinset setting up before you are ready to install any tiles.
- 2). Check the back of each tumbled marble tile for inconsistencies in the depth of each piece. Given the nature of natural stone, there will occasionally be thin spots, which need additional thinset prior to installation to protect the strength of the stone. Dab extra thinset into these areas using your trowel.
- 3). Place the tumbled marble into its desired location and apply gentle but firm pressure as you press the tile into the thinset. Move it slightly in all directions to ensure the bond with the thinset is complete, then move it to its final location. Repeat this process with every tile.
- 4). Use the tile spacers as necessary, bearing in mind that tumbled marble is extremely rough in terms of size, and not all pieces will line up perfectly. Use the spacers as a reference point only, gauging the overall size and straightness of the grout joints with your eyes. For wall installations tile spacers are necessary regardless, but they may need to be doubled up in places to make up for tumbled marble pieces that are unnaturally sized.
