Learning How to Weld

    • 1). Lay a slab of wood near the piece you are welding. The wood should be about 12 inches square and 2 inches thick. Place the welder on the wood when not in use. Lay two pieces of scrap metal end to end on the worktable. Lay a third piece of scrap next to the piece of wood you will use for resting the welder. Put on your protective gear.

    • 2). Rest the welding rod on the piece of wood. Plug it into an outlet approved for welders.

    • 3). Tap the rod on the third piece of scrap metal laying next to the wood rest. Tap it lightly for a brief moment to get rid of any debris on the tip of the rod.

    • 4). Practice putting the welder on the other two pieces of metal. Change the amp settings and see what works for your scraps. Once you are comfortable with the welder and rod, go on to the next step.

    • 5). Lay two of the 3.2mm metal rods on the work surface end to end. Your welder should be resting on the block of wood. Set the welder to 110 amps.

    • 6). Hold the rod at a 20-degree angle above the metal rods. If you need to support the welder with your other hand, wear the proper gloves. Remember that the rod in the welder will shorten as you weld the pieces of metal rod.

    • 7). Move the welder in a straight line, making sure the pieces of metal are touching. Use a slight "weaving" motion to control the welder. You will notice the welding rod getting shorter as you move the welder down the metal rod. Turn the metal rods as you go along. Repeat this as much as necessary. When you are comfortable, move to the next step.

    • 8). Lay the metal pad on the work surface. Weld a straight line close to the edge of the pad to the bottom of the pad. Repeat welding lines one next to the other evenly from top to bottom. The lines should by now be straight. Turn the pad 90 degrees. Start welding lines from the edge to the other edge. When you finish you should have rows of vertical lines and horizontal lines all of which are straight. Keep practicing until you can do this easily.
