Handrails should be installed on each side of a stairway. The handrail should be sturdy and wide enough to allow a good grasp. This is especially important for older adults, who can benefit from handrail support when climbing stairs. - Young children are especially prone to injury from stairways. Install baby gates at the top and bottom of any staircase in your home. The best gate attaches to the wall with screws and has a safety lock.
- Keep clutter off of stairs, such as toys and shoes. These can be potential tripping hazards for anyone ascending or descending the stairs. Installing adequate lighting helps people to see potential hazards, and the top and bottom of the stairway should be well illuminated.
- Keep steps clear and free of ice and snow.stairs image by martini from Fotolia.com
Outside stairs must be kept clean and clear as well. This is especially crucial in severe weather, when snow, rain or ice can create slick conditions. Carpeting on steps should be inspected for any tears or worn spots and repaired if needed. It should also be firmly attached to each stair.
