How to Detour Raccoons in a Crawl Space
- 1). Close off all possible entries to the crawl space. Make sure vents and holes in the roof, wall or door are sealed. If ventilation is needed, use steel mesh screens to seal openings.
- 2). Apply ammonia to the crawl space with a rag or brush. The pungent odor annoys the animals because of their acute sense of smell.
- 3). Check each day to ensure the ammonia odor is still present. The odor may fade after a little while. Apply more if needed.
- 4). Keep the crawl space well lit. Raccoons are nocturnal animals, so they prefer dark places. Lighting can be done using a lamp, drop light or flashlight.
- 5). Place a radio close to the crawl space, and play it day and night. Along with having an acute sense of smell, raccoons have a keen sense of hearing. Since they do not like the sound of human voices, this tends to drive them away.
