How to Make a Witch Hat That Moves
- 1). Draw a circle on the construction paper with the compass. The larger the circle is, the taller your witch hat will be.
- 2). Cut out the circle. Make a cut from the outer edge of the circle to the center point of the circle. Tuck the end of the paper to the right of the cut under the paper to the left of the cut. Pull the paper in until you create a cone shape out of the circle. Tape the two edges against each other when the base of the cone is the desired width of your witch hat point.
- 3). Use the compass to draw a second large circle on construction paper. This circle will serve as the brim of your witch hat. Cut out the circle. Cut a smaller circle approximately 5 inches in diameter out of the center of the brim for a doughnut shape. The center hole will be used to thread the fishing line through the hat, allowing it to move.
- 4). Cut 1 cm slits into the circular edge of the cone. The slits should be spaced approximately 3 cm apart and be cut up toward the point of the cone. Fold the flaps between the slits up and out, creating a fringe around the base of the cone.
- 5). Place the cone in the center of the circular hat brim with the paper tabs pointing out towards the edge of the brim. The inner circle cut out of the brim should be hidden underneath the cone. Glue the tabs down onto the brim, securing the cone in the center of the hat brim.
- 6). Fold the top 3 to 5 inches of the point of the witch hat down and crease the fold. Unfold the point returning it to its original position. The crease will serve as the joint where the point of your witch hat will move up and down.
- 7). Thread a piece of fishing line a few feet in length onto the needle. Tie a knot in the end of the fishing line. Poke the needle in, through the top point of the witch hat above the crease and back out through the other side of the point. Poke the needle back into the center of the cone through the area of the cone below the crease. Thread the needle and fishing line through the circle cut out of the center of the hat brim so it emerges under the brim of the hat. The knot in the fishing line keeps it from pulling through the top.
- 8). Place the hat on the head of the person wearing the costume. Remove the needle and tie the fishing line around the wrist of the hat wearer so it is fairly taut, allowing for the point of the witch hat to bend up and down easily at the crease when the spooky hat wearer moves their arm and wrist.
