How to Apply Polyurethane to Your Concrete Floor
- 1). Sweep the floor thoroughly to remove all traces of dirt and debris.
- 2). Fill a bucket 3/4 full of water and add a cup of a dregreasing floor cleaner such as trisodium phosphate (TSP). Wet the entire concrete floor and scrub it with a push broom to remove all stains and dirt.
- 3). Rinse the floor. Use the push broom or a mop to rinse the floor with clean water to remove the cleaning solution. Allow the floor to dry for 24 hours or until it is completely dry.
- 4). Apply a thin, even coat of epoxy to the entire floor area and allow it to dry for one to two hours. When the paint is dry, apply a second coat of the epoxy-based product and allow it to dry for 24 hours. Epoxy primers are available in clear if you want the natural concrete color to show through. Epoxy paint should be used if you want to color the floor.
- 5). Cover the floor with a thin layer of polyurethane and allow it to dry for one to two hours. Continue applying thin coats of polyurethane and allowing it to dry until the desired shine is achieved on the floor.
