Dinosaur Art Project Ideas

Children are fascinated by dinosaurs. Doing dinosaur art projects with kids can be a fun and educational way to spend a rainy day. These projects can be created from common objects found around the house and require little skill to complete. - Create your own dinosaur skeleton using simple materials you can find in your home. Mix potting soil with craft glue, adding glue until the soil sticks together. Create your working surface by rolling the soil and glue mixture into a ball. Flatten onto a plate to about 1/2 inch thick. Then smash pieces of uncooked macaroni in a plastic bag. Use the pieces to create the shape of a dinosaur skeleton in your soil by creating the outline of the spine, legs, tail and head. Create different species of dinosaurs by altering the shape of the skeleton. Allow the work to dry and display your discovery proudly.
- Make large dinosaur feet for playing dress-up using old tissue boxes as the base of the form. Cut a small piece of cardboard and place it over part of the hole to make it smaller so children’s feet won’t slip out while they are walking. Paint the boxes green, or the color of the dinos in your child's imagination, and add white foam triangles to the front end of the box to form toenails. If desired, decorate the feet by gluing on pieces of foam or construction paper in different colors.
- Create a diorama using a shoebox with lid, construction paper and fabric scraps. Have children design the background to reflect how they imagine the dinosaurs’ setting to be. Line the back of the shoe box with blue paper for the sky. You can add cotton ball clouds, a yellow sun, or even an asteroid if you are depicting the extinction of the dinosaurs. Decorate the foreground with paper trees, small rocks, foil lakes or any other objects your young artists might imagine. These can be three dimensional sculptural pieces you create or two dimensional images glued to the background. Then add two or more plastic dinos to finish the piece in the center to show them in their habitat.
