How to Purchase a Shipping Container

1Determine whether you want a shipping container made of either aluminum or steel and decide where you want it installed. If it is to be a permanent storage space, you may need to prepare a site. If it's going to be moved, you'll need to decide where to place it for convenience.

Decide what sized container you want. You can buy a standard 40-foot container or a larger 48-foot one or smaller ones that are 30, 20 or 10 feet long. The standard width is about eight feet although some contains are available in 10-foot widths. Size usually determines the price, which for a used container can range from $1,500 to $3,000 or more and for new ones from $1,500 to $5,000.

Consider any optional features you want on in your shipping container. Such add-ons as shelving or shelving systems, climate control, ventilation ramps, clothing hanger systems, roll-up doors or other features can be found or installed. These, of course, will cost extra on both new and used units, but if you need such options, it's good to know their availability before you purchase a container.

Check your local zone regulations and requirements, particularly in a residential area, for any restrictions on containers or site modification requirements, such as a concrete pad on which the container must be located. Some communities may have covenants barring containers because they do not meet strict requirements.

Investigate your local area for dealers handling shipping containers. Some companies offer shipping containers along with construction office trailers and storage units and other mobile and fixed facilities. Additionally, you can check eBay, which usually has a substantial list of available used shipping containers. However, keep in mind that the further away the dealer, the more you'll have to pay in transportation costs top your site.

Examine containers carefully before purchasing one. Used container may have been in service for 10 or 15 years and suffered damage. Go inside the container and close the door, making sure it fits tight. Sniff the air for odors and while you're in the dark, search for any signs of daylight leaking in. Check all of the surface rust to make sure no rust holes have formed. Walk the floor to make sure it is completely solid with no weak spots. Check the door seals and look under them to make sure there's no damage. Inspect the roof to make certain it is not dented. Inspect an welds or repairs to make sure they are solid and proper.
