    • 1). Go over your entire floor with tack cloths, to take up any dust or debris.

    • 2). Put on your rubber gloves. Starting in the far corner of the room and working in sections of a few square feet, brush on your stain in the direction of the floorboards. Let it sit for a minute. Wipe it up with your paper towels. Continue to the next section. Repeat until the whole floor is stained.

    • 3). Let the floor stain cure for at least 24 hours. Use your tack cloths to go over the surface and take up any dust or grit.

    • 4). Pour down a line of oil-based polyurethane floor gloss in the far corner of the room, making the line about as long as the width of your floor gloss applicator. Run the line perpendicular to the direction of the floorboards. Set the applicator in the gloss and slowly drag it backward, with the direction of the floorboards.

    • 5). Pour more gloss as needed and continue using the applicator to spread it out, covering the entire floor. Let it dry at least 24 hours.

    • 6). Lightly rough up the surface of the gloss with 220-grit sandpaper, sanding it by hand with short, quick strokes. Sand the whole floor. Use your tack cloths to take up the excess dust.

    • 7). Apply a second coat of gloss in the same manner as the first. Let it dry, then buff it and clean up the dust as before. Apply a third coat, and let it cure for several days before using the floor.
