- 1). Locate the rafters with the stud finder.
- 2). Identify each rafter with a chalk mark when you locate it.
- 3). Line up the solar panel mounts, also called flush mounts, evenly on top of rafters. Use a laser level to line up the flush mounts.
- 4). Pre-drill entry holes using a pilot bit to prevent splintering of the rafters.
- 5). Use the lag bolts to attach the mounts to the roof. Put two to four inches between the panels and the roof for air circulation and cooling.
- 6). Cover each mount with a metal flashing, also known as a metal rail.
- 7). Use 3/8-inch stainless steel bolts to secure the mounts and metal rails together.
- 8). Slid or snap the solar panels into place on the rails and mounts system.
